HyperDrop on Linux

Install

HyperDrop for Linux runs on Ubuntu 24.04 and newer, Debian 13 and Fedora 41 and newer, on x86_64 and ARM64, under Wayland or X11. Add the HyperDrop package repository and install hyperdrop-desktop with the menu for your file manager; the Linux download page has the commands. The repository is signed, and apt or dnf checks every package against its key.

Open HyperDrop from your applications. Choose Join a HyperDrop server and paste your join code, or Set up a server to create one (on a Linux server or a Synology NAS). The app carries its own copy of the command line; the separate hyperdrop package is only for using it in a terminal, and both share your servers.

The file-manager menus

Each file manager has its own package: hyperdrop-nautilus for GNOME Files, hyperdrop-dolphin for Dolphin and hyperdrop-thunar for Thunar. Right-click files or a folder and choose Share via HyperDrop, Live Share via HyperDrop or, on one folder, Receive Files Here via HyperDrop. GNOME Files shows the menu after it restarts: log out and in, or run nautilus -q.

The tray icon

HyperDrop keeps running in the tray while a window is closed. GNOME shows tray icons only with the AppIndicator extension: Ubuntu turns it on, and on Fedora install and turn on AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support. Without it HyperDrop quits when its window closes, once nothing is uploading. KDE Plasma and Xfce show the icon as they are.

Updates

apt and dnf update HyperDrop with the rest of your system (sudo apt upgrade, sudo dnf upgrade, or your software centre). The command line inside HyperDrop updates with the app. When a new version cannot work with a server you are signed in to, HyperDrop says so and asks for that server to be updated (Version mismatch).

Uninstall

Run sudo apt remove hyperdrop-desktop or sudo dnf remove hyperdrop-desktop; the menu packages go with it. It keeps what you need to pick up again:

• the app's settings, in ~/.config/hyperdrop-desktop, and its extensions, in ~/.local/share/hyperdrop;
• the servers you are signed in to, in ~/.config/hyperdrop;
• their sign-ins, in your desktop's keyring (the entries for com.gethyperdrop.app).

To remove those too, delete the folders and the keyring entries after uninstalling. Your shares stay on your server.
